Equipment

  • 1 Large Skillet for browning beef
  • 1 9-inch Pie Dish or baking dish
  • 1 Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Wooden Spoon or spatula

Ingredients

Beef Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 recommended for best flavor
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce adds classic cheeseburger flavor
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Batter Topping

  • 2 large eggs room temperature preferred
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder helps topping rise slightly
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted, adds richness

Topping

  • 1.5 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese freshly shredded for best melt

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9-inch pie dish with butter or cooking spray.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion together and cook until no pink remains.
  • Drain any excess grease from the skillet carefully to keep the pie from turning soggy.
  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well so the beef is fully seasoned.
  • Spread the seasoned beef mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared pie dish.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, and melted butter in a mixing bowl until smooth with no lumps.
  • Pour the batter evenly over the beef layer in the dish. Do not stir once poured.
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the top of the batter layer.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and set in the center.
  • Remove from the oven and let the pie rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheddar for the best melt. Drain the beef well before adding the batter to avoid a soggy base. Let the pie rest at least 5 minutes before cutting so slices hold together cleanly. Frozen slices keep for up to 2 months.
